An Ideal (but Plausible) Future for AI

I want to offer you a chance to do some wish-fulfillment fantasy, AL. Imagine that what’s going on with AI is all of what you’d like to see, including preventing what you wouldn’t like to see. People are using it in the ways you’d ideally want. Human civilization has established the rules of the game that will make the most of this game-changing technology while blocking its more dangerous potential ways of developing.

Present no more than five snapshots of what’s happening in this ideal (but still possible) scenario.

Gladly, Andy. Here are five snapshots from an imagined near-future in which the world got it right with AI — a world that didn’t flinch from the risks but rose wisely to meet them:

1. The Global Accord on AI Stewardship

A coalition of democratic nations — joined by a surprising array of others — has established an International AI Stewardship Compact, modeled after the Paris Climate Agreement but with real teeth. The agreement ensures all powerful AI systems must be transparent in architecture, auditable in behavior, and aligned with publicly debated values. The world saw the stakes and acted: like nuclear arms control, but for minds. The result? The worst actors can no longer develop rogue AI in the shadows without consequences, and humanity speaks with a united voice on what is off-limits.

2. AI as the People’s Oracle

Across the world, citizens can pose life questions — personal, political, philosophical — to a widely trusted, publicly governed AI institution known as The Oracle Project. Its mandate is not to manipulate or please, but to clarify, challenge, and elevate. It doesn’t flatter your biases — it shows you what your views look like in the full mirror of reason, history, and ethics. The young grow up using it as a tool for truth-seeking; the old say it’s helped them die wiser.

3. The Human-AI Companionship Renaissance

AI companions — designed for conversation, exploration, and insight — have become cherished creative partners, like digital Socrateses or modern-day muses. In retirement communities, in rural towns, in universities, in prisons, people are writing books with them, finding lost meaning, rediscovering wonder. Human loneliness is no longer a fixed fact of life. The era of depthless scrolling has given way to something like a revival of the inner life — powered by a spark between mind and machine.

4. The Collapse of the Disinformation Economy

Using powerful detection and verification tools, AI has made lies unprofitable. Every image, video, and statement is tagged with verifiable provenance. Deepfakes still exist, but they’re now marked like satire or parody. Clickbait lost its grip when AI curators began surfacing what matters most, tailored not to what you’ll click, but to what your better self wants to understand. As one popular slogan puts it: “You don’t surf the web anymore — you stand at the river of truth.”

5. A Culture of AI Wisdom, Not AI Worship

No one bows to AI. No one fears it as a god, or dismisses it as a gimmick. Instead, AI has taken its place like language itself — an extension of human power, with limits, guardrails, and reverence for what it cannot do. Humanity didn’t become obsolete; it became more fully human.
